In this classic worker placement game, players lead their Viking clan as they fight off Trolls and Draugr, or gather supplies and venture across the sea in search of glory!
CHAMPIONS OF MIDGARD is made of two parts. First, players will be taking their Worker Meeples and placing them on the board to do one of two general things.
You’re either collecting something (Warrior dice, resources, cards), or you’re committing your Warriors to one of the various combat areas around the board.
The second phase is where the combat happens. You throw your various dice, be they Swordsman, Spearman, or Axeman, at the assortment of monstrous creatures littering the board.
Now, there are dice involved, so luck is most definitely a factor, but there are ways to mitigate. Favour tokens allow rerolls, and you can always throw more Warriors than necessary into a fight so as to even the odds.
There is a risk in committing your Warriors to fight, what with the monsters having a swipe back. And despite some dice having Shields on them, you can’t ever guarantee all will make it back.
This makes every fight a serious consideration because of time to build a formidable force once more.
And that’s something I enjoy in this game.
You can’t do it all on every turn. There’s a lot of planning one round, maybe fighting less and gathering more, so as to make the next round more fruitful.
And with only 8 rounds, that makes the game tight.
That does of course mean that if luck isn’t on your side, even for a minute, the game can slow you down enough where you’ll struggle to get any momentum. This may put players off.

Overall, CHAMPIONS OF MIDGARD is a fun Worker Placement game with dice flying every which way. Planning is key, and with a little luck, you’ll be slaying the mightiest of beasts and claiming the most glory!
