GLOOMHAVEN: JAWS OF THE LION (2020)

For a third of the price (or more) of it’s bigger brother, you and up to three friends can journey to another world and learn the rules of GLOOMHAVEN in the best way possible.

Each of you will play a character with his or her own set of cards, abilities, and unlockables.

Follow the story and dig deeper into the contents of JAWS OF THE LION as you fight monsters and uncover secrets.

I can’t praise this game enough. Like many people, GLOOMHAVEN is a shinning light that grabs the attention of gamers, but it’s cost, size, and complex rules can put a lot of players off.

Thankfully @cephalofairgames created this amazing prologue that guides new players into the gameplay at a steady pace yet doesn’t take forever to make you feel like a skilled monster killer.

JAWS OF THE LION tackles the core of GLOOMHAVEN, and gives you a manageable slice of the pie for your first go. A book of maps instead of tiles. 4 characters instead of 17. £40 instead of £140. Here, less is more.

We completed a play through in around 28 hours. Every scenario was fun and interesting.

The game introduces mechanics a bit at a time. The first five scenarios are for training. And then you’re off into the adventure.

Like GLOOMHAVEN, having regular gamers sticking with you makes it much better (or play solo). While I would have loved to have played both this and the original with max player count, it was easier with just the girlfriend and I.

And that’s what made it all the better for me. Having her beside me, through the triumphs as well as the failures (one scenario ended hilariously when we accidently opened up doors that released monsters too early, lol).

But the 28 hours were our playthrough and half of my love for this game comes from that.

A fantastic co-op game if you have the time for it. And prepares you for GLOOMHAVEN, which you will almost surely be guaranteed to dive into straight afterwards.
