SUSHI ROLL (2019)

Like it’s siblings SUSHI GO! and SUSHI GO! PARTY, this game is all about passing round and selecting food for yourself in ways that score you the most points over three rounds.

What’s different in this dice rolling variation, is that the information throughout the round is always open, and always changing.

In SUSHI ROLL, at the beginning of each turn, the players reroll their dice before the choosing of food items begins. So even if the dice you receive from the player beside you may look rubbish, the potential is always there for better.

I prefer this version to the original card game. I always struggled to formulate any plan in SUSHI GO! as I’d forgotten what might be coming round on my next turn.

Here though, you can always see what is available, and if you have the tokens, you can even swap dice with another player.

The dice themselves are among my favourite in our collection. They are so cute and colourful.

Despite its family fun aesthetic, SUSHI ROLL can be quite tactical as you eye up what other players have and work out the odds of your best course of action. Knowing when to bail on Puddings and grab some Maki Rolls can swing game.

One of the downsides to this game, which I’ve already mentioned, is the ability to swap dice around. Some players may not like rolling something they need, only to see it taken away from them.

And in a 2-player only game, with no Pudding penalty a player can ignore them completely and take a dfferent, potenially more lucritive, route to points. Our games see us fighting over who gets left with puddings instead now.

Overall, SUSHI ROLL is a great gateway game, and a fun one to break out between bigger plays. And rolling dice is always fun.
