This game is dripping with 80’s budget horror movie aesthetic, and it’s all the better for it.
In ZOMBIES, players are running around a Zombie infested city, hunting down the Helipad and doing their best to reach it first and escape.
It sounds easy, especially when you see the grid layout of the city tiles. But there are a couple of things that make it somewhat difficult.
First off, players don’t know where the helipad is located. The city is built out one tile every turn, each player deciding where they want their tile to go, CARCASSONNE style.
And the Helipad tile is buried in a pile, so who knows when it will turn up. It means the rest of the game is survival, and trying to position yourself on the map so that you’re not at a disadvantage when freedom finally shows up.
The other difficulty is those previously mentioned Zombies. They get everywhere. Every tile that is laid brings more and more Undead to the table.
Despite how messy it all looks, once the game is underway, it’s incredibly simple to play.
Roll two dice. One lets you move your character that many spaces, and the other lets you move that many Zombies one space each, like the shambling, looming threat that they are.
This isn’t about tactics. This isn’t about skill. It’s overflowing with chaos, and only luck will see you make it to the end.
Throw in some action cards that let you take out your friends/opponents, and it’s the perfect recipe for a crazy fun time.
Sure, for some the simplicity is what will put them off. And its components are as low cost as they look.
And the game can drag on sometimes.
But it’s all part of the charm.

Get a bunch of friends together, unleash the Undead hordes, and see who is lucky enough to make it to the end.
